Richardson, Jones locked in tight QB battle as Colts search for the right fit under center

WESTFIELD, Ind. — As training camp rolls into its second week, one thing is clear in Colts camp: the quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones is as close as ever.

Head coach Shane Steichen said the team’s priority isn’t just identifying the most productive quarterback, but the one who brings the full roster together.

“I think the toughness and the competition part's been really good,” Steichen said. “And then we're trying to build a mental, physical toughness, create an edge, you know during camp. And really, this is about coming together as a football team.”

Richardson, whose 2023 rookie season was cut short by a shoulder injury with lingering effects, continues to stack impressive days. On Monday, he finished 10-of-15 during 11-on-11 drills, connecting for three touchdown passes and adding another on the ground.

“I just got to work as if I am going to be the day one starter, you know, regardless of what decision they make,” Richardson said. “I'm still working on improving, you know, they're going to make the best decision for the team. And that's ultimately what we need. This team wants to win the Super Bowl. It's not about me. It's about the team.”

His mindset remains grounded in team-first thinking.

“If I do get the job, you know, glory to God,” he added.

Daniel Jones also had a strong showing Monday, going 7-of-10 with a touchdown to wide receiver Ashton Dulin. While much of the quarterback decision remains outside his control, Jones said he’s focusing on what he can.

“I think my job, and all of our jobs as players, is to work and improve every day,” he said. “You’re human — you think about where you stand — but the best thing you can do is focus on what’s right in front of you.”

Steichen has yet to name a front-runner for the starting role and emphasized that the coaching staff is watching Richardson’s workload closely, especially as he returns from injury. But for now, both quarterbacks continue to earn reps and build chemistry in what’s shaping up to be one of the most meaningful position battles of camp.

The decision may not be made yet, but for the Colts, it’s about more than stats. It’s about setting the tone — and choosing the leader who can elevate the entire team.
