“Best Deep Threat in the NFL”: Alec Pierce Shines at Training Camp
WESTFIELD, Ind. — The quarterback battle may be drawing the most attention, but if you’ve been watching Colts training camp closely, it’s clear who’s been stealing the show: fourth-year wide receiver Alec Pierce.
Pierce caught two touchdowns during Saturday’s practice — one from each of the quarterbacks vying for the starting role. His sharp route-running, acceleration, and chemistry with both passers have made him a consistent target through the first four days of camp.
His performance hasn’t gone unnoticed by his teammates. Veteran wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. offered high praise for the former Cincinnati Bearcat:
“I mean, Alec’s doing what I think he’s always done — he’s just very consistent, very fast. And he’s the best deep ball threat, like, in the NFL.”
Pierce is coming off a breakout 2024 season, where he led the Colts in receiving yards. Now, as the team installs new offensive looks and prepares for its first preseason game in two weeks, the receiver says his job doesn’t change — no matter who’s throwing the ball.
“If you ask me, in the balls I caught today, I can't even tell you who the quarterback was,” Pierce said. “That’s credit to them. I don’t have to change anything — they’re both talented quarterbacks and are putting the ball where it needs to be.”
Colts head coach Shane Steichen echoed that sentiment, noting Pierce’s steady rise through the offseason and into camp.
“Man, I’ll tell you what — he just keeps making strides,” Steichen said. “Last year was a hell of a year for him. He carried it over into the spring and he’s continued in training camp. He’s an explosive player with the ability to make a lot of plays for us.”
With one more practice scheduled before a team day off Sunday, the Colts’ wide receiver corps is showing signs of cohesion and chemistry — something they’ll need as the quarterback picture continues to unfold.
