Pole Vault in the Plaza brings high-flying action, big impact to Naples
NAPLES, Fla. — Mercato is not your typical track-and-field venue, but for one night, it became one.
Pole vaulting and charity do not always go hand in hand, but here in Naples, they do.
More than a thousand people packed Mercato for the fifth annual Pole Vault in the Plaza, where elite athletes and a local crowd came together for something bigger than competition — supporting St. Matthew’s House.
Organizers say the event brought in at least $20,000, helping fund the nonprofit’s mission across Southwest Florida.
"The fact that they’ve come out; they’re getting the crowd excited," said Ben Bridges, CEO of St. Matthew’s House SWFL. "Keeping people engaged and excited about not only the event, but about the mission of St. Matthew's House, it’s just a beautiful synergy that we’re able to participate in."
What started as a unique idea has grown into a major community event. Organizers say this year marked the largest turnout yet — a sign that the event is continuing to gain momentum.
"It’s honestly incredible. This is by far the best outcome we’ve had," said Simon Weardon, organizer of Pole Vault in the Plaza. "I, like, personally believe that if you’re going to give to the community, you should really do it at the most local level you can."
For the athletes, the night carried meaning beyond the sport.
"As athletes, we want to inspire everybody, the next generation, the charities, everybody involved," said Olympic pole vaulter Anicka Newell. "So, I think that makes it that much more heartfelt. And you want to just do better and do more."
Organizers say events like this are essential, helping them continue their work for those in Southwest Florida who need it most.
"We are a place where all are welcome, and we exist here in Southwest Florida to ensure that no one is alone on their journey out of hunger, homelessness or addiction," Bridges said.
That mission is ongoing. Pole Vault in the Plaza is just the latest effort as St. Matthew’s House continues to partner with the community to raise support and awareness.
Up next, the organization is preparing for its largest fundraiser of the year: a golf tournament set for Monday. The St. Matthew’s House Charity Golf Scramble tees off at 1 p.m. Monday, April 20, at the TwinEagles Club in Naples.
